The affairs of the world will go on forever. Do not delay the practice of meditation. – Milarepa

There will Always be stuff to do, it never ends. We become weak and lose vitality as we grow older, so don’t wait till later to venture on the spiritual path.

Each one of us has to undertake his own journey and we do it in our own unique way. But those who put all heart into prayer and meditation progress faster towards the goal.

Pray, meditate Now. Spend a few minutes, praying here and now, as you sit at your computer.

Do everything with a mind that lets go.
Do not expect any praise or reward.
If you let go a little, you will have a little peace.
If you let go a lot, you will have a lot of peace.
If you let go completely, you will know complete peace and freedom.
Your struggles with the world
will have come to an end.

Be vigilant; guard your mind against negative thoughts.
– The Buddha

Just like junk food, there are ‘junk thoughts’. Our mental states and our behaviour are affected by what we see, hear, and read every day.

We should take care not to make the intellect our god; it has, of course, powerful muscles, but no personality.
– Albert Einstein

Great spiritual teachings are practical, not theoretical. The Buddha will say, “I have no theories.” It’s one of his most disarming statements. He did not engage in intellectual discussion, and often he would meet questions with a noble silence.

We need meditation to work on our consciousness. It is not of much help to have only an intellectual understanding.

The Buddha doesn’t talk about theory. Like all great teachers, he says, “These are things that you can verify for yourself.” He is a supreme scientist who will say, “Undertake this experiment and discover the results for yourself.”

Hasten slowly and ye shall soon arrive.

– Milarepa

Too many activities at the same time, too many commitments, excitement, all drain energy. Do one thing at a time, with singlemindedness of purpose and complete focus. It’s rewarding, you’ll enjoy the activity more and see better results.

All of us are apprenticed to the same teacher that the religious institutions originally worked with: reality.

Reality-insight says … master the twenty-four hours. Do it well, without self-pity.

It is as hard to get the children herded into the car pool and down the road to the bus as it is to chant sutras in the Buddha-hall on a cold morning. One move is not better than the other, each can be quite boring, and they both have the virtuous quality of repetition.

Repetition and ritual and their good results come in many forms. Changing the filter, wiping noses, going to meetings, picking up around the house, washing dishes, checking the dipstick – don’t let yourself think these are distracting you from your more serious pursuits.

Such a round of chores is not a set of difficulties we hope to escape from so that we may do our “practice” which will put us on the “path” – it is our path.

Gary Snyder, The Practice of the Wild

We all need a personal experiment in mindfulness, to revel in the wonder and simplicity of present moments. But we don’t have to go out of our way or find someplace special to practice mindfulness. It is sufficient to make a little time in our life for stillness and ‘non-doing’, and then tune in to our breathing.

The miracle of the changing seasons is within our breath. Our parents and our children, our body and our mind, all are within our breath. The breath is the current connecting body and mind. It is the current of life.

God himself culminates in the present moment, and will never be more divine in the lapse of all the ages.

wg-laoTzuDo you have the patience to wait

till your mud settles and the water is clear?

Can you remain unmoving

till the right action arises by itself?

Lao-Tzu, Tao-te-Ching

At the center of your being you have the answer;

you know who you are and you know what you want.

Meditation is the process by which we go about deepening our attention and awareness, refining them, and putting them to greater practical use in our lives.

Meditation is about being yourself and knowing something about who that is. It helps us see that our life has direction; that it is always unfolding, moment by moment; and that what happens now, in this moment, influences what happens next.

Meditation helps you chart a course for yourself that is truer to your inner being.
